616 at Gap Rock, but kindly promised to send it round to Tai Po next morning, to bring in Mr. Ross, and also a Chinese coolie with bad burns from the Tai Po Cottage Hospital, whom Dr. Aubrey had kindly also seen for me.
The "Stanley" duly conveyed Mr. Ross to Hongkong on Thursday, and Dr. Koch today informs me that the illness is simple tertian malaria, one of the benign forms of the disease.
Mr. Eves's precipitate action in sending Dr. Aubrey was totally unnecessary; even had the case been more serious, the total gain of time was half a day, since Dr. Aubrey arrived in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and I would have been there about midday.
But granting that, in spite of my opinion to the contrary, Mr. Eves was justified in sending another, I submit to the judgment of Doctor on finding me unable to go, His Excellency the Governor whether his action in doing so without duly informing me, after arranging with me to attend on Wednesday, and thereby sending me on a fool's errand, was other than an act of grave discourtesy to an officer of my seniority.
